BRE X, ROCKAWAY TOP NOMINATIONS
Bre X and Red Star Rockaway led the way
with four nominations each as the finalists for the 2003
B.C. Standardbred industry awards were announced.
Committees from both the B.C.
Standardbred Association (BCSA) and the B.C. Standardbred
Breeders Society (BCSBS) reviewed all of the nominations and
trimmed them down to three or four finalists per category.
These finalists were then passed on to the judges committee
for the selection of the winners.
Their decisions will be announced at
the awards banquet on Feb.14.
Bre X, a seven-year-old gelding, has
been dominant in the Invite division at the Downs for the
last year including setting a track record of 1:53.2 on Oct.
3. At the present meet alone he had eight wins in 12 starts
in the Invite including a stretch of six in a row. He won 17
times in the year for more than $116,000 in earnings.
Rockaway was a powerhouse in the
three-year-old filly division in 2003. She won 11 of 16
starts for the year, including the Delta on March 29, the
B.C. Breeders on Nov. 8 and the Arbutus at Sandown on July
20 in a lifetime best time of 1:54.4. She earned more than
$151,000 for the year.
Earning three nominations was Red Star
Justice, who equaled Bre X’s track record, while Da Lil
Dudette and Sing Mitzi For Me got two nods each.
On the two-legged side, Bill Davis
could make it six successive wins as top driver in the
over-250-drive category. He is also in line for the top
trainer, an award he has captured four of the last five
years.
