The stage is set for a big dual — within a battle — in Sunday’s $34,400 final of the Langley Pace at Fraser Downs.

Two B.C. breds -- Red Star Senator and Active Pass -- with stake’s race history will garner much of the attention, based on their big-money success, and their wins in last week’s eliminations.

However, the draw has made it a big challenge for Active Pass who drew the outside eight hole. Senator on the other hand, will be on the rail.

Senator, part of a 2-5 favored entry, started the New Year with a victory in the first $8,364 division. Later on the Sunday card, Active Pass, a 2-5 top choice, captured the other division.

Senator, driven by Jim Burke, was impressive, winning by four lengths in a swift time of 1:54.3 on a track rated two seconds off.

After getting away third, Senator made a move just before the three-quarter pole and took the lead. He was much too good from that point. Wild Rumour, who was second much of the way, came back to finish second after early leader Thisisbliss slipped to third.

Senator, a four-year-old son of Presidential Ball-Whimsically, had a record of 29-8-6-8 and more than $140,000 in earnings in 2005 and has 12 lifetime wins and almost $190,000 in purse earnings.

He is owned by Mary Murphy and trained by Bob Meschback.

Meanwhile, Bill Davis piloted Active Pass to a half-length win in 1:57.1.

The pair started in the two hole and stayed there as Stonebridge Camlot took the early lead. But Davis soon – just after the quarter – made a move to take control. They did although Camlot and driver Jim Marino came back with a late try in the stretch. Barrel Racing, an entry mate of Stonebridge Camlot, was third.

Active Pass recently won the Sales Stakes and in 2005 had nine wins in 15 starts and earnings of more than $126,000. A good part of those earnings came in the Breeders Stakes when he finished second – to Senator.

J J J Stable and Alan Anderson, who also trains the son of Kents On Nuke-Plain Image N, own Active Pass.

Both Senator and Active Pass will have entry mates in the final, Thisisbliss and Wild Rumour, who will start next to Senator, respectively.

The others in the final will include another entry Barrel Racing and Stonebridge Camlot along with Accent Seelster, We Winnie Winston and Sergeirachpaninoff.
