Award nominees named
Samantha Square and Nazko Promise each picked up five
nominations to lead the way as finalists for the B.C.
Standardbred Industry Awards.
The B.C. Standardbred Association (BCSA) and the B.C.
Standardbred Breeders Society (BCSBS) recently announced the
finalists for the 2001 awards which will be presented at a
banquet Feb. 16 at Newlands Golf and Country Club in
Langley.
Horses nominated on the BCSA side of the awards must have
had the majority of their starts in the province to qualify
and are judged only on their B.C. performances. The BCSBS
awards are for horses that are B.C. bred according to the
traditional definition, which is owner at time of service.
The B.C. breds are judged on the basis of their performance
regardless of where they are racing.
Samantha Square, a three-year-old filly and Nazko
Promise, a three-year-old colt, each were nominated by both
bodies in their age category. They each were nominated in
the outstanding performance category by each body and in the
BCSBS's horse of the year category.
The Industry Awards will also honour horsemen and
breeders. Awards will be made to trainers and drivers based
on their averages for the year and the BCSA Horseman of the
Year will be announced at the awards event.
Several other awards will be made in addition to the BCSA
and BCSBS honours. Teletheatre BC will present its Rising
Star Award to a horse and a horseman based on voting by
their patrons. Fraser Downs fans have also voted for a Horse
and Driver of the Year in the People's Choice Awards.
Dan Jukich, the usual master of ceremonies will share
duties with Woodbine/Mohawk track announcer Frank Salive who
will be at Fraser Downs for the Drivers Challenge on the
same weekend. The BCSBS will be staging their popular live
stallion service auction during the evening, with all
proceeds going to their Education Fund.
Tickets cost $40 per person and are available at the BCSA/SBS
office. While it is an industry event, race fans are most
welcome to attend. More information is available at the
office, 604-574-3633.
